About Us

The Maine Drawing Exchange is an artist and model run collective that strives to provide artists with accessible opportunities to draw from the figure, and models with a safe space to work.

We offer drop-in sessions, workshops, and events on the third floor of 39 Exchange Street in Portland, Maine.

Making Figure Drawing Accessible to the Public

The Maine Drawing Exchange sprung from a need for accessible and affordable figure drawing and painting opportunities in the greater Portland area. We began by meeting and drawing in public spaces like Congress Square Park, and in March 2024 we landed on 39 Exchange Street. Traditionally, life drawing is reserved for educational institutions or the artist's private studio, both of which are exclusive.  The  Maine Drawing Exchange disrupts this formula by making figure drawing accessible and affordable to the public. During our drop-ins  and Long Poses we provide artists with a professional, paid model, art supplies as needed, and a comfortable public setting. Our educational workshops allow artists to expand upon their skills alongside other artists in the community.
